Dr. Yuna Rapoport on CBS Mornings: A Rare Macular Transplant and the Future of Vision Restoration

Sept 14’s CBS News discussion focused on a unique surgical achievement and what it could mean for the future of vision-restoration research.

On CBS News with Vladimir Duthiers and Adriana Diaz, Dr. Rapoport discussed an extraordinary case involving a successful macular transplant performed together with an anterior segment transplant.

Corneal transplants are relatively common because the cornea does not contain blood vessels. The macula, however, is very different. It has an extensive blood supply and is attached to the choroid, making the process of carefully transplanting it while maintaining function particularly complex.

In this case, the patient had suffered a devastating accident that left her blind in both eyes. One eye had a functioning optic nerve, while the other had functioning retinal tissue. Surgeons were able to combine these vital structures in an attempt to restore vision.

This is a rare and highly specialized procedure, but it offers an important proof of concept for what may be possible in the future of vision-restoration surgery.

The success of this case was made possible in part because surgeons could use the patient’s own healthy retinal tissue. That makes the procedure very different from a traditional transplant involving tissue from another person.

Transplanting donor retinal tissue or developing retinal tissue in a laboratory would bring additional challenges, including helping the tissue survive, function, and avoid immune rejection.

This is still an emerging area of research, but the case gives valuable insight into what may be possible in future vision-restoration treatments.
